There are a number of ways to become involved with the BAC, from general membership to committee and leadership positions. Below, you will find information on how you can be a part of the BAC, and determine which level of involvement is best for you. All levels of involvement require general body membership, the requirements of which are outlined below:
General Body Membership
- Attend monthly *meetings (by physical attendance or by calling in)
- Provide insight and feedback regarding BAC initiatives
- Use word-of-mouth / social and professional networks to publicize BAC initiatives and events
- Pay annual membership dues
- Visit http://alumni.columbia.edu to update your University alumni profile. Please choose Black Alumni Council under Regional Club & Association E-mail Lists within your online alumni profile (select Update Profile and scroll to the bottom of the page). To access your alumni profile, you need to register your UNI (University Network ID).
*Black Alumni Council General Body meetings are typically held on the 2nd Wednesday of every month, beginning at 6:45pm. A call-in number is also provided in the event that members are unable to attend.
E-Board Leadership
- Hold an official position on the Executive Board of the Black Alumni Council
- Attend all BAC General Body meetings and events
- Oversee sub-committees (events, scholarship fund, external relations, etc.)
- Spearhead initiatives that support the growth of the organization (gaining non-profit status, bank account management, expansion, etc.)
- Communicate goals/needs of Black alums to the University
Sub-Committee Membership
- Work on specific initiatives under leadership of Executive Board members
- Responsible for sections of initiatives, as designated by sub-committee head (i.e. publicity, venue, catering, etc.)
- Facilitate completion of initiatives from idea to event, etc.
Event Execution
- Assist with the set-up/breakdown of events
- Help execute logistics of events, as directed by sub-committee chair (including checking guests in, collection of cover fees, etc.)

Sub-Committees
Scholarship Fund Committee
- Develop innovative ways to increase participation and meet financial goals for each Fiscal Year
- Assist with the planning and execution of Scholarship Reception/Networking Night (March/April)
Events
- Submit ideas for events that complement the goals of the BAC
- Develop comprehensive plans for specific events, and the execution of those events
- Attend and assist with successful event execution
Student Relations
- Develop innovative ways to enhance alumni-student relationships
- Work with Student Relations Chair to develop network of alumni support for current students
- Support mentorship programming
External Relations
- Work with External Relations Chair to develop community initiatives that the BAC can support
Communications
- Support the maintenance of Black alumni database
- Assist with website management and design
